A Room for Baby

I think there are some skeptics out there who thought this post wouldn't happen. Alas, the nursery is officially complete! At least, it is for me. If you think there's something missing in this room, by all means, keep it to yourself.

My hormones are such that if you said anything negative about this room I WOULD track you down and I would break your knee caps.

There are a couple things about Baby Boy's room I would like to mention.

One, I'm not a person who loves super matchy things. By the photos below, I'm pretty sure you've deduced this. Don't get me wrong; I love a well curated room. However, I enjoy spaces that are interesting and fun to be in. I've had the luck of knowing people who have an eye for what unexpectedly looks good together, people who know how to pair items that others wouldn't and I like to think (hope? Pray?!) that some of their natural skill has rubbed off on me. Please note, I am by no means saying I am a talented interior decorator.

Two, I do not have a favorite color, but I'll tell ya what I don't like: pink for girls and blue for boys. Maybe I should rescind that statement; what I mean to say is color is color and it should be celebrated, gender be damned! Yellow is such a happy color, and when plopped next to gray and white, I feel you can't go wrong.

Three, this room would not nearly look as good as it does if it weren't for our generous family and friends... y'all rock.

Most of these images are repetitive, but I'm not a photographer, nor do I claim to be, so it was the best I could do to provide you with a full "feel" of the layout.

I plan on posting links to some of the items that are available online, but won't have a chance to until tomorrow. Let me know if something catches your eye and I'll let you  know where I found it!

Making My Friday

A quick post about a few things making my Friday.

Dinner with awesome friends at new San Diego restaurant, Gabardine.

Great logo, am I right?

This informative article about pitbulls by the number. I LOVE things like this because I am constantly getting in arguments with people who hate the breed and back up their ignorance with made up facts. I love posting photos of my pitbull, Moe, so here's a favorite for you:

How could you say 'no' to this squishy face?

This wonderful First Fiesta Birthday Taco Party via 100 Layer Cake.

Olé, yes?! Maybe next year for Baby Boy's first birthday? Hahaha, I'm certainly getting ahead of myself, aren't I?

Speaking of which, today marks 100 days until his due date. WHOA. That happened quickly.

And speaking of whoa, it's been brought to my attention a few times in the last couple weeks, so I need to clear the air. A SERIOUS pet peeve of mine is when people spell 'whoa' as 'woah.' It's completely incorrect. There's only one correct spelling (and it's WHOA).

WHOA. Have an amazing weekend, everyone.

A List: Awesome Things for Pregnancy

This is one of those "only gonna wanna read it if you're supremely bored or expecting a baby" kind of posts, so don't tell me I didn't warn you! Flee from this site if there is nothing less in the world you would rather read about. FLEE!

Every woman is going to have their own "must haves," but sometimes it's nice to hear about what's been helpful to others. Mainly, I'm blathering on hoping that the things that have been helpful to me may be helpful to you.

Water

I've talked about this nonstop in the last couple weeks, but I feel I must emphasize how much I've come to love drinking agua. Yesterday, I calculated my daily water intake to be 1-1.25 gallons a day (mind you, I'm talking about just water- this does not include any other beverages or the natural water I'm getting from the food I eat). A gallon a day! Can you believe it? My current relationship with the stuff is summed up pretty well right here:

Ooooh, yeah, water! Truth be told, I feel thirsty ALL THE TIME. It's less about drinking it for health reasons and more about just feeling parched non-stop, but as I've mentioned, water has been a lifesaver in a few ways (and I say this while knocking on wood because I know in throwing it out into the universe, I am tempting fate). One, I'm a regular girl. Yup. Pretty gross, but if we could all just be adults for a moment, doesn't being constipated, like, totally fucking suck? The answer is yes, friends. Two, I have yet to swell up like a crazy balloon (ask me how well this is going in a month when I'm in my third trimester. Again, I am just rolling the dice with fate). And finally, in a baby related way, the more water you drink, the more you pee, thus the more toxins you flush from your body and away from your baby. It's a science lesson I'm not willing to go into, but trust me, water is GOOD.

Kick Ass Nalgene Bottle

A quick side note about Nalgene bottles before I rave about the one I own. These became all the rage when I was in college and I loved the idea of not wasting tons of plastic because of the water I was drinking, so I got a sporty hot pink one. Within a few uses, my water tasted like plastic ALL THE TIME because they hadn't yet figured out that BPA leaches into the drink it's carrying. This has been corrected friends. It's safe to use a Nalgene again!

Does it make me 5 years old for giggling at the fact that it's their "wide mouth" bottle?

Anywho, my friends Sally and Fiona got me an awesome one from Best Friends Animal Society a couple months ago (I would have linked up to the exact bottle, but they don't sell it on their site). It has been a lifesaver because I can tote my huge bottle of water with me wherever I go. I own a couple Sigg bottles, but they just don't hold as much.

L'Occitane Almond Supple Skin Oil

Warning: I am actually a non-believer when it comes to avoiding stretch marks by using lotions or creams. It's comparable to my disbelief that vitamin C can have any positive effects on my health if I'm sick. I'm of the opinion that if you're gonna get stretch marks, you're gonna get stretch marks no matter how many voodoo curses you send their way. Having said that, when your skin is as tight as a drum and comparable to these images, I feel it necessary to point out how damn itchy it gets:

Oh, St. Nick, how do you do it? My friend Jenny gave me this oil from L'Occitane in a "New Mama" basket she sweetly made for me, and while it may or may not tend to any stretch marks I might get, it does help with my seriously itching skin. And I smell like a dream afterward. No joke!

The Snoogle

You've heard me rave about it, so I'm sure it's no surprise that I am wholeheartedly endorsing The Snoogle. In the vein of things that are great but have horrible names, this full body pillow is certainly a part of those ranks.

I had a near nervous breakdown about a month ago because of my inability to sleep for three days straight. My stomach has gotten too big to comfortably (or safely) sleep on my back and my hips hurt when I lay on my side... tack on peeing at least 3 times a night from all the damn water I drink (see above) and it was exhaustion just waiting to happen. While I still get up a few times a night, The Snoogle has certainly made life easier.

Gap Maternity

It's true. I am straight up sold on Gap Maternity One, they have a plethora of online sales, which helps because while their stuff isn't horribly expensive, I certainly wouldn't call it cheap. Two, they have MANY great basics, including their leggings, their tanks, and dark wash skinny jeans.

I will say, full disclosure, that I'm a bit peeved at them with how quickly things in my size fly out the window right off the bat. Cute dresses and some tops have been just within my reach and then snatched away at a moment's notice. Free shipping on orders over $50 and an easy return policy still make them my go-to shop for clothing that actually fits me.

Blogs

If you read my bumpdates, you've probably already seen me recommend these, but why not put them in one place where I'm actually recommending things?

About Pregnancy:
Pregnant Chicken (do yourself a favor and read it now)
Baby Center (if you're feeling like a risk taker, go ahead and watch their "real birth" videos. Makes it's VERY real, let me tell you).
Lucie's List (to assuage any baby registry stress... helped me loads!)

Nursery Decor:
Lay Baby Lay (I've actually found a few nifty bits via the inspiration boards here)
Design for MiniKind (launched this week; written by the same gal behind Design for Mankind!
Pinterest (obviously, people, c'mon, get your act together!)

Mom Blogs:
Design Mom
Motherhood Mondays on A Cup of Jo
MomFilter (full disclosure, recently found this, but like what I see so far!)

And I think that's all I got for you folks. Folks? Anyone there?

San Diego: Hen Weekend Special

One of my best friends, Miss Jenny herself, is coming down for the weekend and I am ever so excited. We've been meaning to have a weekend sans husbands for quite some time and the fact that our all our guy friends (our men included) are heading to Vegas to bid "farewell" to my husband's life sans child gave us the opportunity!

We have lucky husbands.

So, a quick breakdown of my tentative plans for us. Apologies to any of you (Jenny included) if it sounds a little less than... exciting? Pregnancy kind of takes the party, party, party out of you for the most part.

I am no longer a baller, shot caller, if you will.

Friday:

Pick Jenny up from airport with freshly baked chocolate chip cookies waiting in the front seat. This recipe to be exact. Vegas boys, you may be lucky enough to receive some in the goody package I may have packed for you. This is also a good way for me to find out if any of you read my blog.

Heeelllllo? Guys?

Saturday:

Sleep in.

Little Italy Farmer's Market! Our plan is to pick up ingredients for a fantastic Saturday night dinner. According to the link, Little Italy in San Diego is a "hip and historic neighborhood."

We shall be the judge of this statement.

After moseying about, my next guess is pedicures, but where we will get pedicures has been undetermined. This strategy didn't work out for us in San Francisco a couple weekends ago, but here's to hoping! If it's sunny, I'm thinking picnic in Balboa Park.

Dinner will be masterfully crafted by us complete with tasty, but non-alcoholic beverages. I DO have wine and beer for Jenny though.

I would never expect her to suffer on my behalf.

We may watch a movie, we may just prattle on to our hearts content... who knows? It's a girls' weekend after all!

Sunday:

Sleep in.

Brunch at Searsucker... which I am mucho excited about.

The more I type, the more I realize how this weekend revolves around eating.

I'm ok with this, and I'm hoping she is too!

Either way, as long as the weekend involves some bit of shake face and air guitar, I'm good.

Happy weekend to all, and to get it started on the right foot, why not listen to this?

Berry Delicious, An Obsession

Kyle and I made a trip to Costco this week and I must admit, we went a tad overboard.

The thing that cracks me up about the place is that you head in there to grab only a "few necessities" for cheap, and end up dropping half your bank account. Then, you return home, empty your goods into the fridge and realize that you can't, in fact, make a meal with six canisters of old fashioned oats and a three pound block of Parmesan.

Luckily, we did take advantage of the great selection of fresh organic berries, and they have been making appearances in my lunch every day since. In fact, I'm about to share with you an easy and decadent dish of mine that I think even berry skeptics/non-cooks alike can appreciate.

It has three ingredients. They are as follows:

Blueberries, blackberries and a blood orange. Looks good, yes?

You put the berries (washed, of course) in a bowl, helter skelter, however you like it. You can use any berry you like, for the record.

You then take the blood orange halves and squeeze all the juice and pulp onto the fruit in the bowl.

Voila. It's that simple.

There is an order to eat this side, of course. First, I savor the berries, as slowly as possible (although, when I eat by myself, I have a tendency to choke down food as though I were a ravenous dog. It's a bad habit). Once done, what's left in the bowl will look like this:

Then, I slurp all the juice out of the bowl. Wowza, is it all kinds of tasty. And don't you just love the shade of red? OPI should make a nail polish color after this; it is beautiful.

If you get around to whipping this up, let me know what you think... I'm a berry good listener, after all.

Happy Friday and have a fantastic three day weekend!

Bon Iver Obsession

I've been a fan of Bon Iver for a loooong time... and by long time I mean four years. Since 2008, I think? The nice thing about being married to my husband is that he's music obsessed, so he does all the hard work of finding fabulous groups, songs, etc. and I reap the rewards.

When he played their For Emma, Forever Ago album for me for the first time, it became my "go-to" play: I listened to it while cooking for dinner parties, while hosting dinner parties, while washing up after dinner parties... It really covers the gamut for social gatherings, let me tell you.

We had been fans for a while when we heard about a sunrise concert in Hollywood Forever cemetery, and I think it will be years down the road (or maybe an equivalent will never happen again) before we see a performance we could compare it to. We got there around 4am, and at 5, some Buddhist monks came out chanting. Then, Bon Iver took the stage and to watch them play to a bunch of groggy fans with the sun coming up was magical. I will never forget it.

Today, a friend of mine shared their cover of "I Can't Make You Love Me/Nick of Time," and I have literally had it on repeat for the last 4 hours. I am haunted by it.

I can't make you love me, or this blog, but I can share good music with you either way.

Happy Monday, all!

Instrumental Motivation for Friday

My husband is the kind of person who can work with music blasting in the background. Honestly, I think it helps him and does not distract in the slightest. I, on the other hand, cannot. For me the issue is lyrics; if the words of the song are audible, I focus on them instead of the those that should be flying from my fingers for work or personal writing.

It's my cross to bear, what can I say.

However, there is an exception to this rule which is probably obvious: music that has no words. Ahhh! I'm talking classical music, instrumentals, string quartets... the list goes on.

This morning, to kick off my favorite day of the week, my best friend Britt sent me this accordion quintet's rousing rendition of one of my favorite 80's hits... A-Ha's Take On Me!

Tell me you weren't bouncing in your seat while listening to that... if you deny it, I won't believe you!

Speaking of not believing, or trying to keep yourself believing, it inspired me to share a few of my favorite instrumental covers by various groups, one of which is the song I walked down the aisle to when Kyle and I got married: Journey's Don't Stop Believin'.

Just in case you're planning on getting married in northern California and would like the information for the string quartet who played at our wedding, you can check them out here.

Another favorite cover is Fix You by Coldplay. I blast this in the car when I'm driving alongside the ocean on PCH and I can't tell you how happy it makes me.

And finally, for any Smashing Pumpkins fans, check out this cover of Today... it is seriously awesome.

If this sort of thing floats your boat, I recommend downloading Low Strung's or Vitamin String Quartet's albums, both available on iTunes. They are fantastic.

What a week, what a week! Happy Friday, everyone.

For My Beautiful Sister on her Birthday

"A sister is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost." -- Marion C. Garretty

Here's the thing about the above quote (aside from the fact that it's very true): if I were to base my relationship with my sister Ginny through our interactions in childhood, we might be in some trouble. She was always the sassy one (still is most of the time), getting us into trouble (still does occasionally), stealing my clothes, starting physical fights for no reason other than she liked fighting, then telling on me after I won said fight (I believe it's called self defense in some circles)... the list of naughty things she did when we were little goes on and on.

But there are also the things that cannot be ignored: our fierce propensity to stick up for one another, her ability to make me laugh, our innate understanding of who the other truly is deep down at the heart of it all... We really have made it through the thick of things time and time again, only to find ourselves as best friends.

It feels awesome to be able to say that.

My parents have told me that when they brought my sister home from the hospital 26 years ago, I spent two weeks being a complete nightmare: crying, screaming, throwing tantrums left and right... essentially, anything I could to show my anger at that fact that I was not the only baby anymore. My mom says around day 14, I kind of realized my efforts were for naught and that, no, in fact, you can't just take her away. She was there to stay, just like me.

And thank goodness.

So, to my beautiful, caring, thoughtful, mischievous sister: I love you and a very happy birthday to you.

Haphazard Chicken Tortilla Soup

I have been downing soup like no other this month, and thought it might be time to share my chicken tortilla recipe with you. It is delicious, easy and can be relatively healthy (if you don't cover it in cheese and fried tortilla strips like I do).

Do I have any photos to share of said delicious soup? Of course not! But I hate a post without a photo, so I snagged one from The Pioneer Woman, a cooking blog I return to every Super Bowl for this horribly white trash and drool inducing recipe. OH MA GAWD, is it good!

Just like every recipe I've recommended so far, you can totally alter this to your liking. It's soup, for goodness sake, which means (for those of you who don't cook often) it is hard to screw up. So if you feel like black beans, corn, fresh jalapenos or any other ingredient I don't mention, have at it!

Elizabeth's Chicken Tortilla Soup

1 lb. organic free range chicken breasts (feel free to get more chicken if you like)
6 cups (or more if you prefer) chicken broth
Juice of 3 limes
Two 14 oz cans of tomatoes and chilis
1 onion (chopped)
2 cloves garlic, pressed
Chili powder, cumin, paprika
Canola oil
1 bunch of cilantro, finely chopped
Corn tortillas, cut in small strips
Pepper jack cheese, finely shredded
Avocado, diced
Tortilla Land flour tortillas

Pour chicken broth into a smallish pot and add chicken breasts. Bring to a boil, then turn down heat to medium low. Simmer for 20-25 minutes. Remove chicken from pot and shred with two forks.

In a larger soup pot, heat oil on medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic; cook until translucent. Next, add broth from small pot, then lime juice, canned tomatoes and half the chopped cilantro. Throw in some of the spices (I do about a teaspoon to a tablespoon depending on the spice. Smell them first... If you like the scent, add a little more). Simmer for a bit.

Add shredded chicken and continue to cook until soup is hot. Throw in the rest of the cilantro, then add salt to taste. Don't be afraid of salt! It is your friend. Keep adding until the flavor is working for you.

While soup is cooking, heat canola oil on medium high in a pan (I prefer cast iron because if I overheat the oil on accident, it's not a total pain to clean up when I'm done, and it actually helps season the pan a bit). Add corn tortilla strips in a single layer (i.e. they shouldn't be overlapping) and make sure they sizzle when you add them to the pan, otherwise the oil isn't hot enough and they may not crisp the way you want them to. Fry until golden brown, then place on plate with paper towel so the excess oil can drain off.

Pour soup in bowl, top with cheese, avocado and corn tortilla strips, and serve with freshly heated Tortilla Land flour tortillas and more lime wedges if you have an acidic palate like I do. I just can't say no to extra citrus.

Nom, nom, nom, so yummy!

Hearts, Love and Gift Ideas Abound

Kyle and I usually ignore the schmaltzy forced nature of Valentine's Day, but this year I plan on embracing it whole hog.

Apparently 3 weeks early.

Here are some things I think many lovely ladies (and men for that matter) could appreciate (I made this in Illustrator, but I feel it lacks balance... let me know your take; I'd love the feedback):

Current Web Lovin'

Did everyone have a good weekend? Wunderbar! Mammoth was a snowy heaven straight out of Narnia. Photos of our short adventure should be expected in the next day or two!

It's raining in San Diego... bliss, I tell you, bliss! So while I type away, cozy in an over-sized black sweater with a hot cup of herbal tea steaming on the table, I figured I might as well share a few things I'm loving on the web these days.

I already told you that I have a personal Pinterest account, but Ivory Sparrow launched ours today! Check it out for all things wedding, bride and love inspired. Feel free to follow us if you're in the mood.

A friend of mine posted this article from Huffington Post and I must say, if there's anything to remind a person of the shortness of life, it's a list of the top five regrets of the dying. Not to be completely morbid, but while I feel most people hope death is a long ways off, it's an inevitably for all of us, and wouldn't it be nice to die knowing you did or tried everything you wanted to?

In the "shopping I'd be doing on the Internet if I actually had the money to" department, I've found the following for future decor inspiration: Terrain. I've tried putting into words what my interior decor style is, and I tend to gravitate toward the following words: natural, funky, organic, largely muted with pops of color. How would you describe your style? It's more difficult than you'd think (or maybe I'm the only one who has issues with it?)!

Some items on Terrain I'm jonesing for:

A baker's table that may come in handy after my pastry making class this Saturday!
Reclaimed wood tray? Yes, please!
Adorable tags for homemade gifts... Feeling some Valentine's Day inspiration here!
I think every kitchen might need this sign.
These old fashioned mason jar salt shakers remind me of Grammy.

And finally, this weekend I was told my Mr. G impression from Summer Heights High doesn't actually suck, so I've been watching YouTube clips to brush up and perfect it.

I assure you I'll be looking for a headless jersey dress to add some performance art to my act. Perhaps buy a rabbit mask as well?

Wet or dry, I hope you're enjoying this fantastic Monday.

What Can Happen in 9 Years

For the last 2 years, I've been saying to Kyle, "This is our year. This is totally gonna be our year." Friends, 2010 was NOT our year and 2011 was DEFINITELY not our year... but for once, I'm thinking 2012 might actually be the ticket.

Today is special to me for a couple reasons. One, before Kyle and I got married and had an "official" anniversary of June 20th, we had our anniversary of just being together (you know, the whole exclusivity, off-the-market game). Today marks nine years. Nine years! That's almost a decade, which is almost a third of my life of being with the same person.

Kyle and I met the first day we moved into the dorms freshman year. I introduced myself to him along with two other guys (who still happen to be some of my best friends to this day), but only walked away remembering his name (sorry, Trav and Jacob! I've got it now!). I feel I should mention here that I was dating someone else at this point. We were together the entirety of my fall quarter and he lived a couple hours south, so we did the long distance thing.

All I can say about that boyfriend is that he was one of the sweetest, funniest guys I have ever known... I could not say a single bad thing about him if I tried. But sometimes sweet and funny is not enough, right?

I spent a lot of time with Kyle (and Trav and Jacob), though just as friends. We had a sociology class at an ungodly early hour with the pudgiest Indian teacher known to man, so we'd meet beforehand at the dining commons and have breakfast (we eloquently called it "Breakfast Club"). On Tuesdays, bagels were served and Thursdays, donuts. Kyle really liked Thursdays.

I started to realize how much I looked forward to waking up at the crack of dawn every Tuesday and Thursday morning.

Fall quarter came to an end shockingly fast and during winter break, while snug in my bed in Laguna, I had a dream. I dreamed that Kyle and I were hanging out on a couch holding hands and when I woke up, I remember feeling so calm and peaceful that I started to get a nervous tight feeling in my stomach. The nervousness came from realizing that this dream in my head felt so right in my gut, but seemed sticky when I considered reality. Breaking up with my boyfriend became a thought I seriously began to consider, not because I wanted to "trade him in for Kyle" or anything like that, but because I knew dreaming and thinking of this guy, who I had come to think of as one of my best friends, hinted at feelings that were not necessarily... platonic?

So I ended it with my boyfriend, which was hard because I couldn't give him any good reason for it. I figured if it was meant to happen with Kyle, it was meant to happen and I kind of sat back and relaxed about the whole thing.

Little did I know, Trav and Jacob (yes, the same two from the very beginning!) had heard of the breakup, sat Kyle down and told him to go for it (it being me, I guess?). My husband used to be a very shy guy, so they had to assure him they thought it was mutual.

They really had to assure him.

And luckily for me, he listened... and made a move on January 17, 2003 (the man's no Rico Suavé, but I can remember every detail of it, which I will not be sharing here, and it is a very sweet memory).

Here's the thing about having a blog: you get to filter every bit of your life that you write about. It's easy for me to talk about the love and the happy moments and sweet memories, but it's also easy to ignore the hard stuff, the gritty things people can gloss over when they talk about their daily lives.

Being with the same person for nine years has been no easy task because, let's face it, relationships and marriage are not easy! They take hard work and effort on both parts, forgiveness and acceptance and constant reminders of the good, the great, the love that's there at the root of it all. Focusing on the reasons you fell in love with a person is sometimes more difficult than dwelling on the things that drive you crazy about them. But if you can, if you can force yourself as often as you can to concentrate on the positives, relationships can really be an amazing, synergetic thing.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, thanks for putting up with my bullshit all these years, Kyle... it sure has been fun putting up with yours!  ;)  I love you, honey.

The other reason this date holds significance in my life is that it is the day we officially welcomed Moe into our little family! I've already told you the story of how we found him and decided he was "the one," but I haven't told you about the buildup toward his official appearance.

We met him and his foster parents at an adoption fair outside of Centinela Pet Feed at the very beginning of 2009. It was a set appointment through Forte Animal Rescue and apparently 7 other people/couples had already tried to get him. His fosters were a discriminating couple, and didn't want to give him to just ANYONE (this is a good thing, because sometimes the people who want pitbulls want them for the wrong reason); they didn't get the right feeling with any prior visitors. Luckily, they felt good about us, and once they had done a house inspection and he had met the neighbor dogs, we set his "move in" date for two weeks later.

I was in New York for work the entire week leading up to his arrival, and while I do love myself some Big Apple, the days dragged by because I knew what the end of the week held for me: my dog, Moe.

The plane ride home was excruciating. Since it was our six year anniversary, I swung by the grocery store on my way back to the apartment to grab a bottle of champagne in order to toast our togetherness and as a celebratory welcome to our new furry family member.

His fosters dropped him off, which I know was not easy for them; he had been a part of their little family for four months and they had grown to love him. It wasn't easy for Moe either. He was depressed (and I mean DEPRESSED) for about three weeks. He moped around our apartment and sometimes had to be goaded into getting out of bed.

It was like living with the pitbull version of Judy Garland, minus the major drug and alcohol problem.

I don't know when it clicked for him that he could be happy with us, but it did, and since then, he's never stopped smilin' and he's never looked back.

So you see, what seems like an innocuous date to some is truly a huge one for me. It is the day two of my soulmates came into my life to stay. For good.

And I am forever grateful for January 17.
